5.4 Pathophysiology

The fundamental pathophysiological problem in mitral stenosis is the obstacle to ventricular filling which occurs due to the involvement on various levels of the valve apparatus:1.pre-orifice: we shall see below how the functional area can vary as the shape of the valve changes in the prestenotic area, independent of the anatomical area;

2.valve: the anatomical-pathological alterations we have described, such as leaflet rigidity and fusion of the margins, reduce the anatomical area;
